The CITB Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) course is a 2-day training course for those responsible for managing, coordinating and taking overall responsibility for temporary works on construction projects. Available at our classroom venues across the UK and online, it equips delegates with the knowledge, processes and legal understanding required to fulfil the TWC role in line with BS5975:2019.
No previous qualifications are required. The course is suitable for experienced construction professionals who coordinate or manage temporary works schemes including scaffolding, falsework, formwork, excavation support and propping systems.
What is a Temporary Works Coordinator?
A Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) is the individual responsible for managing the overall temporary works process on a construction project. The role is defined within BS5975:2019, the British Standard for the management of temporary works, and carries significant responsibility for ensuring that temporary works are properly designed, checked, approved and executed safely.
The TWC sits above the Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) in the temporary works management hierarchy. While the TWS oversees on-site execution, the TWC is accountable for the broader coordination process, including liaising with designers, issuing permits and maintaining the temporary works register.
On many projects, the TWC role is a contractual and legal requirement. Attendance on this course alone does not confer competency, which comes from a combination of education, training and experience as judged by an appropriate senior individual, most usually the Designated Individual (DI). Training is considered an essential element of TWC competence by CITB.
Who Should Attend?
This course is aimed at experienced construction professionals who hold or are moving into a coordination or management role for temporary works, including:
- Site managers and project managers responsible for temporary works
- Engineers and design managers overseeing temporary works schemes
- Contracts managers with temporary works responsibilities
- Those appointed as the Designated Individual (DI) or TWC on a project
- Temporary Works Supervisors (TWS) looking to progress to coordinator level
- Health and safety professionals with oversight of temporary works
If you supervise rather than coordinate temporary works on site, the CITB Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) course may be more appropriate for your role.
What Does the Course Cover?
The TWC course focuses on the processes involved in managing temporary works, with particular emphasis on the coordinator role, responsibilities and legal obligations. Topics covered include:
- The duties and responsibilities of the Temporary Works Coordinator
- The roles of others within the temporary works management structure
- BS5975:2019 and the code of best practice for temporary works
- Temporary works overview and categories of risk
- Statutory aspects of temporary works and relevant legislation
- Risk assessments and method statements for temporary works
- Management of the temporary works process from inception to removal
- The importance of the 4Cs: communication, co-operation, co-ordination and competency
- Permits to load, alter and strike
- Temporary works registers and document control
- Case studies from real temporary works failures and incidents

What is the Difference Between TWC and TWS?
The TWC and TWS are two distinct roles within the temporary works management structure defined by BS5975. The key differences are:
- The Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) manages and coordinates the overall temporary works process on a project. They are responsible for design management, checking, approval, permitting and maintaining the temporary works register. This is a senior role with significant legal accountability.
- The Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS) supervises the on-site execution of temporary works. They ensure that work is carried out in accordance with approved designs and method statements, and report to the TWC.
Many construction professionals take the TWS course first and progress to the TWC course as their responsibilities grow. If you are unsure which course is right for you, call us on 01245 379496 and the team will advise.
