The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Plant Operations (Transporting Loads) is the nationally recognised, work-based qualification for operatives who transport loads using plant machinery on UK construction, civil engineering, demolition and infrastructure sites. It demonstrates proven, on-site competence in the safe and efficient movement of loads using plant equipment, and is the qualification required for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker card.
Target Zero Training delivers this NVQ remotely across the UK with a dedicated assessor assigned to you from enrolment through to certification. Assessment takes place on your worksite using the equipment you operate every day. No classroom, no days off site, no written exams. To get started, call 01245 379496.
What is the Level 2 NVQ Plant Operations Transporting Loads?
This is a competency-based qualification approved by Ofqual and CITB. It assesses what you can already do on site rather than testing theoretical knowledge in a classroom. Your assessor observes you operating transporting plant, reviews your work-based evidence and conducts a professional discussion to verify your underpinning knowledge against the National Occupational Standards.
The qualification covers two mandatory units plus one optional unit from the transporting loads pathway. Mandatory units are:
- M/508/6537: Conforming to General Health, Safety and Welfare in the Workplace
- T/508/6538: Conforming to Productive Working Practices in the Workplace
Optional units within the transporting loads pathway include preparing and operating forward tipping dumpers, articulated dumper trucks, site dumpers and other plant used to transport loads on site. You complete the unit that matches the plant you actually operate in your current role.
Who is This NVQ For?
This qualification is for plant operatives who transport loads using construction plant machinery as part of their current employment. Primary roles include:
- Forward tipping dumper operators moving excavated material, aggregate and spoil on construction and civil engineering sites
- Articulated dumper truck operators working on larger civil engineering, road building and infrastructure projects
- Site dumper operators moving materials across construction sites
- Any operative using plant machinery to transport loads as part of their regular on-site duties
You must be in active employment with regular access to the relevant plant machinery on site. The NVQ assesses existing competence, so it is suited to operatives already working in transporting roles who need formal recognition of their skills.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. You must be employed and regularly operating transporting plant on site. No prior qualifications are needed. If you are new to operating dumpers or transporting plant and not yet working independently, speak to us about the NPORS training route as a starting point before undertaking the NVQ.
How the Assessment Works
Your dedicated Target Zero assessor manages the entire process from start to finish:
- Initial contact: Your assessor introduces themselves, explains the process and agrees a schedule around your site commitments.
- Portfolio of evidence: You gather work-based evidence covering each unit. Your assessor guides you through exactly what is needed at every stage.
- Knowledge discussion: Knowledge unit questions are answered through a recorded professional discussion. No written exam required.
- On-site observation: Your assessor observes you operating transporting plant on your own worksite, confirming practical competence against National Occupational Standards.
- Internal verification: Completed portfolios are quality-assured before certification is issued.
- Certificate: Your NOCN Level 2 NVQ Diploma certificate is emailed directly to you on completion. The qualification does not expire.
Most candidates complete within 4 to 6 weeks, providing they have regular site access to transporting plant. Before applying for your CSCS or NPORS card, ensure your CITB Health, Safety and Environment test is current. It must have been passed within the previous 2 years and can be booked via CITB.
