What is the NPORS N202 360 Excavator Course?
The NPORS N202 360 Excavator course is an accredited training and assessment programme for anyone operating a 360-degree slew excavator on construction or civil engineering sites. The category covers both tracked and wheeled machines above 10 tonnes, and is the standard plant operator qualification required by most UK principal contractors and Build UK members.
Delivered by experienced NPORS-registered instructors, the course combines classroom theory with hands-on practical assessment on the machine. Successful candidates receive an NPORS operator card, either as a Traditional card (valid 5 years) or a Red Trained Operator card with the CSCS logo (valid 2 years, upgrading to a 5-year Blue Competent Operator card once the relevant NVQ is completed).
The 360 Excavator is one of the most widely used machines on UK construction sites, covering groundworks, bulk excavation, trenching, lifting operations with quick hitches and attachments, and general site earthworks. Qualified operators are consistently in demand across the infrastructure, housing and utilities sectors.
Who Should Attend?
The NPORS 360 Excavator N202 course is suitable for anyone who operates, or is about to operate, a 360-degree excavator as part of their role. This includes:
- Groundworkers and civil engineering operatives
- Plant operators needing formal certification for site access
- Utilities contractors carrying out trenching and service installation
- Demolition operatives working with excavator-mounted attachments
- Site operatives moving into plant operation roles
- Experienced excavator users needing recognised NPORS certification
- Workers changing employers who require card-scheme compliance
All attendees must be at least 18 years old, in good physical health, and have a good understanding of spoken and written English. For the Red CSCS-logo card route, a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) touch screen test passed within the last two years is also required.
NPORS 360 Excavator Training Routes
We offer three distinct attendance routes depending on your experience level.
Novice Course
Designed for candidates with no prior excavator experience. The course typically runs between 5 and 10 days depending on your starting ability, machine size and the level of instruction required. An initial assessment at the start of the course confirms the number of training days needed before the final theory and practical assessment.
Refresher Course
A shorter 2 to 3-day programme for operators who already hold or have previously held an excavator qualification and need updated training to current NPORS standards. Final day covers the formal theory and practical assessment.
Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA)
A 1-day test-only route for operators with either 18 months of verifiable 360 excavator experience or 6 months of consistent daily use. No formal training is delivered beforehand. The day covers the NPORS theory test and practical assessment only.
Tracked and Wheeled Excavator Options
The NPORS N202 category covers both tracked and wheeled 360-degree excavators above 10 tonnes. The assessment is carried out on the machine type the candidate will be operating on site, and the card is issued showing the machine type and weight category. We can accommodate both tracked and wheeled assessments, and can advise on the correct route if your role involves both. For machines below 10 tonnes (mini and compact excavators), a separate NPORS category applies. Call 01245 379496 to confirm the right route.
What Does the Course Cover?
The NPORS 360 Excavator N202 syllabus meets the National Occupational Standards for 360 excavator operation. By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Explain the roles, responsibilities and legal duties of a 360 excavator operator under PUWER and LOLER regulations
- Identify the major components of a 360-degree excavator and describe their functions
- Locate and correctly operate steering, tracking, slew and hydraulic boom controls
- Carry out manufacturer-specified pre-operational and running checks
- Safely mount, dismount, start and stop the machine
- Track and manoeuvre the excavator safely, including on slopes and uneven ground
- Set up the machine correctly on firm ground with safe slewing arcs
- Excavate trenches, foundations and bulk earthworks to line and level
- Load dumpers and haul vehicles safely and efficiently
- Change and safely use quick hitches and standard attachments
- Identify underground and overhead service risks and apply exclusion zones
- Work safely near pedestrians, banksmen and other plant
- Carry out end-of-shift shutdown and security procedures
- Identify and report faults, defects and near-miss events
Assessment Structure
All NPORS 360 Excavator courses include two formal assessments:
- Theory test: An open and multiple-choice written paper covering legislation, health and safety, machine knowledge and operating principles. Candidates must achieve the required pass mark to proceed to the practical.
- Practical test: An observed assessment on the machine itself. Candidates must demonstrate safe pre-use checks, accurate excavation to line and level, safe loading of a dumper or haul vehicle, correct attachment changes, and proper shutdown procedures to the NPORS standard.
Candidates who pass both elements receive their NPORS N202 360 Excavator operator card. Cards are issued in the weeks following the assessment and posted directly to the candidate or their employer.
NPORS 360 Excavator Card Types Explained
There are three card outcomes available from the NPORS N202 course, depending on the route chosen and the candidate’s status.
Traditional NPORS Operator Card
Valid for 5 years. Issued after successful NPORS training and assessment. Does not carry the CSCS logo and is widely accepted on agricultural sites, utilities contracts and many industrial and commercial sites. No CITB HS&E test required. No NVQ requirement.
Red Trained Operator Card (CSCS Logo)
Valid for 2 years. Issued after passing NPORS training and assessment plus a valid CITB HS&E touch screen test. During the 2-year period, the operator must complete the relevant Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations (Excavating) to progress to the Blue Competent Operator card.
Blue Competent Operator Card (CSCS Logo)
Valid for 5 years. Awarded once the operator holds both a passed NPORS N202 assessment and the relevant Plant Operations NVQ. The Blue Card is the standard required by most principal contractors on Build UK sites. Target Zero Training can register you for the Plant Operations NVQ alongside your N202 assessment.
On-Site NPORS 360 Excavator Training
Target Zero Training delivers NPORS 360 Excavator courses at your workplace across the UK. Our assessors come to your site and train on the actual machine your operators use every day, which removes travel time, eliminates machine-familiarity issues and is the most cost-effective option for employers certifying two or more operators at once.
On-site delivery requires a suitable training area with firm, level ground, a compliant 360 excavator (LOLER and thorough-examination up to date), excavation space for trenching and bulk removal practice, and a quiet area for classroom sessions. We can also bring a machine to your site where needed. Call 01245 379496 to discuss on-site requirements and get a quote.
NPORS 360 Excavator vs CPCS A59: Which Should You Choose?
Both NPORS N202 and CPCS A59 are CSCS Alliance-approved schemes, and both carry the CSCS logo when the Red or Blue card route is taken. The practical differences are:
- Flexibility: NPORS 360 Excavator training can be delivered on your site. CPCS A59 assessments must take place at an approved CPCS test centre.
- Cost: NPORS is typically more cost-effective, particularly for group bookings and on-site delivery.
- Speed: NPORS card issue is usually faster, and EWA routes can be arranged at shorter notice.
- Site acceptance: Both cards are accepted on Build UK and CLC-compliant sites. A small number of contractors specify CPCS only, so always check site requirements first.
For most operators, NPORS is the quicker, more flexible and more cost-effective route. For more detail, see our guide on NPORS vs CPCS.
