NPORS Telehandler training (category N010) is the UK’s most practical route to certification for telescopic handler operators working across construction, utilities, warehousing and agriculture. At Target Zero Training, we deliver the NPORS N010 Telescopic Handler course for complete novices, experienced operators needing refresher training, and seasoned workers taking the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) for test-only certification.
Courses run at our training venues and on your site nationwide. To book or discuss your requirements, call us on 01245 379496, use the enquiry form on this page, or email sales@targetzerogroup.co.uk.
What is the NPORS N010 Telehandler Course?
The NPORS N010 Telescopic Handler course is an accredited training and assessment programme for anyone operating a telehandler (also known as a telescopic handler, reach forklift or boom lift) on construction, agricultural, utilities or industrial sites. The category covers the safe use of telehandlers fitted with forks, and is the standard qualification required by most UK principal contractors and Build UK members.
Delivered by experienced NPORS-registered instructors, the course combines classroom theory with hands-on practical assessment on the machine. Successful candidates receive an NPORS operator card, either as a Traditional card (valid 5 years) or a Red Trained Operator card with the CSCS logo (valid 2 years, upgrading to a 5-year Blue Competent Operator card once the relevant NVQ is completed).
Who Should Attend?
The NPORS Telehandler N010 course is suitable for anyone who operates, or is about to operate, a telescopic handler as part of their role. This includes:
- Construction site operatives moving materials on active builds
- Plant operators needing formal certification for site access
- Warehouse and yard staff handling loads at height
- Agricultural workers and farm operatives
- Logistics and utilities staff using telehandlers for material movement
- Experienced telehandler users needing recognised NPORS certification
- Workers changing employers who require card-scheme compliance
All attendees must be at least 18 years old, in good physical health, and have a good understanding of spoken and written English. For the Red CSCS-logo card route, a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) touch screen test passed within the last two years is also required.
NPORS Telehandler Training Routes
We offer three distinct attendance routes depending on your experience level.
Novice Course
Designed for candidates with no prior telehandler experience. The course typically runs between 3 and 5 days depending on your starting ability and the level of instruction required. An initial assessment at the start of the course confirms the number of training days needed before the final theory and practical assessment.
Refresher Course
A shorter 2-day programme for operators who already hold or have previously held a telehandler qualification. Day one focuses on updating knowledge and practical skills against current NPORS standards; day two is the formal assessment.
Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA)
A 1-day test-only route for operators with either 18 months of verifiable experience or 6 months of consistent daily telehandler use. No formal training is delivered beforehand. The day covers the NPORS theory test and practical assessment only.
What Does the Course Cover?
The NPORS Telehandler N010 syllabus meets the National Occupational Standards for telescopic handler operation. By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Explain the roles, responsibilities and legal duties of a telehandler operator under PUWER and LOLER regulations
- Identify the major components of a telescopic handler and describe their functions
- Locate and correctly operate steering, drive, braking and hydraulic controls
- Carry out manufacturer-specified pre-operational and running checks
- Safely mount, dismount, start and stop the machine
- Manoeuvre the telehandler forwards, backwards and in confined spaces
- Read and apply load charts to determine safe working loads at reach and height
- Lift, travel with, place and stack loads accurately using forks
- Work safely on sloping, uneven and restricted ground conditions
- Load and unload vehicles safely, including trailers and delivery wagons
- Carry out end-of-shift and shutdown procedures
- Identify and report faults, defects and near-miss events
Assessment Structure
All NPORS Telehandler courses include two formal assessments:
- Theory test: An open and multiple-choice written paper covering legislation, health and safety, machine knowledge and operating principles. Candidates must achieve the required pass mark to proceed to the practical.
- Practical test: An observed assessment on the machine itself. Candidates must demonstrate safe pre-use checks, accurate load handling, safe travel, load placement, and correct shutdown procedures to the NPORS standard.
Candidates who pass both elements receive their NPORS N010 Telescopic Handler operator card. Cards are issued in the weeks following the assessment and posted directly to the candidate or their employer.
NPORS Telehandler Card Types Explained
There are three card outcomes available from the NPORS N010 course, depending on the route chosen and the candidate’s status.
Traditional NPORS Operator Card
Valid for 5 years. Issued after successful NPORS training and assessment. Does not carry the CSCS logo and is widely accepted on agricultural sites, utilities contracts and many industrial sites. No CITB HS&E test required. No NVQ requirement.
Red Trained Operator Card (CSCS Logo)
Valid for 2 years. Issued after passing NPORS training and assessment plus a valid CITB HS&E touch screen test. During the 2-year period, the operator must complete the relevant Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations to progress to the Blue Competent Operator card.
Blue Competent Operator Card (CSCS Logo)
Valid for 5 years. Awarded once the operator holds both a passed NPORS N010 assessment and the relevant Plant Operations NVQ. The Blue Card is the standard required by most principal contractors on Build UK sites. Target Zero Training can register you for the Plant Operations NVQ alongside your N010 assessment.
On-Site NPORS Telehandler Training
Target Zero Training delivers NPORS Telehandler courses at your workplace across the UK. Our assessors come to your site and train on the actual machine your operators use every day, which removes travel time, eliminates machine-familiarity issues and is the most cost-effective option for employers certifying two or more operators at once.
On-site delivery requires a suitable training area, a compliant telehandler (LOLER and thorough-examination up to date) and a quiet area for classroom sessions. We can also bring a machine to your site where needed. Call 01245 379496 to discuss on-site requirements and get a quote.
NPORS Telehandler vs CPCS Telehandler: Which Should You Choose?
Both NPORS and CPCS are CSCS Alliance-approved schemes, and both carry the CSCS logo when the Red or Blue card route is taken. The practical differences are:
- Flexibility: NPORS Telehandler training can be delivered on your site. CPCS A17 Telescopic Handler assessments must take place at an approved CPCS test centre.
- Cost: NPORS is typically more cost-effective, particularly for group bookings and on-site delivery.
- Speed: NPORS card issue is usually faster, and EWA routes can be arranged at shorter notice.
- Site acceptance: Both cards are accepted on Build UK and CLC-compliant sites. A small number of contractors specify CPCS only, so always check site requirements first.
For most operators, NPORS is the quicker, more flexible and more cost-effective route. For more detail, see our guide on NPORS vs CPCS.
CITB Grant Funding
The NPORS Telehandler N010 course is CITB grant claimable for CITB-registered employers, meaning a significant portion of your training cost may be recoverable. Grant values are set by CITB and are subject to change. We can help with eligibility questions and point you to the right claim process. For more information, visit our page on CITB grants and funding or call 01245 379496.

- A valid CITB HS&E touch screen test certificate (for Red CSCS card candidates only)
- A pen and notepad for classroom sessions
- Any existing plant-operator cards or training records
Career Prospects After NPORS Telehandler Training
Qualified telehandler operators are consistently in demand across UK construction, infrastructure, agriculture and warehousing. Typical roles include site plant operator, materials handler, yard operative and site logistics operator. Many operators go on to add further NPORS categories, such as 360 Excavator (N202), Forward Tipping Dumper (N204) or Slinger Signaller (N402), to increase employability and day rates.
Progressing to the Blue Competent Operator card via the relevant NVQ opens doors to supervisory and managerial roles on larger sites, and can support progression into site supervisor and site manager positions through further training such as SSSTS and SMSTS.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the NPORS Telehandler course take?
Course length depends on your experience. The Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) takes 1 day. The refresher course takes 2 days. The novice course typically runs between 3 and 5 days, with the exact number confirmed after an initial assessment at the start of training.
Do I need any experience to take the NPORS Telehandler N010 course?
No. The novice route has no prerequisites and is designed for complete beginners. We carry out an initial assessment to confirm how many days of training you need before your test day. If you have 18 months of verifiable experience or 6 months of consistent daily use, you can attend as an experienced worker and take the 1-day EWA route.
What is the difference between the Red and Blue NPORS Telehandler card?
The Red Trained Operator card is issued after passing the N010 assessment and CITB HS&E test. It is valid for 2 years, during which you must complete the relevant Plant Operations NVQ to upgrade to the Blue Competent Operator card. The Blue Card is valid for 5 years and is the card most commonly required by principal contractors on large UK construction sites.
Do I need the CITB health and safety test for an NPORS Telehandler card?
Only if you are going for the CSCS-logo card (Red or Blue). The CITB HS&E touch screen test must have been passed within the previous 2 years. If you are taking the Traditional NPORS card route without the CSCS logo, the HS&E test is not required.
Is the NPORS Telehandler card accepted on all UK construction sites?
NPORS CSCS-logo cards (Red and Blue) are accepted on sites requiring CSCS-scheme cards, which includes the vast majority of UK construction sites operated by Build UK and Construction Leadership Council members. The Traditional NPORS card is accepted on agricultural sites, utilities contracts and many non-CSCS sites. Always check specific site requirements with your principal contractor.
Can NPORS Telehandler training be delivered at our site?
Yes. We deliver NPORS Telehandler courses on employer sites across the UK, provided a suitable training area and compliant machine are available. On-site delivery is the most cost-effective option for two or more operators and removes travel time. Call 01245 379496 to discuss on-site requirements.
Is NPORS Telehandler training eligible for CITB grant?
Yes. The NPORS Telehandler N010 course is CITB grant claimable for CITB-registered employers. Contact us or your CITB grants team for current grant values and claim process. See our CITB grants and funding page for more detail.
What happens if I fail the NPORS Telehandler assessment?
Candidates who do not pass the theory or practical assessment will be given clear feedback on the areas requiring improvement. Retake options are available and can be arranged through our booking team. There is a separate fee for a retake, which will be confirmed at the time of booking.
How long is the NPORS Telehandler card valid for?
The Traditional NPORS card is valid for 5 years. The Red Trained Operator card is valid for 2 years, during which the relevant NVQ must be completed to progress to the Blue card. The Blue Competent Operator card is valid for 5 years and must be renewed through refresher training and assessment.
