When preparing for the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, one of the most common questions candidates ask is: what is the pass mark? Understanding the assessment criteria and grading system can help you set clear goals, focus your revision, and feel more confident on exam day.
Understanding the NEBOSH General Certificate Assessment
The qualification is structured to test both theoretical knowledge and practical application in workplace health and safety. There are two key assessments:
- NG1: Management of Health and Safety – a written, open book examination.
- NG2: Risk Assessment – a practical assignment based on a real workplace scenario.
Together, these elements ensure that candidates not only understand health and safety legislation but can also apply it effectively.
What is the Pass Mark?
- NG1 (Open Book Exam): The pass mark is set at 45%. This means you need to score at least 45 marks out of 100 to achieve a pass.
- NG2 (Practical Assessment): This is graded on a pass or refer basis. To pass, you must demonstrate that you can carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment and justify your recommendations effectively.
Both assessments must be passed in order to achieve the overall qualification.
How NEBOSH Grades are Awarded
NEBOSH awards grades based on the overall performance across both assessments:
- Pass: 45–64 marks
- Credit: 65–74 marks
- Distinction: 75 marks and above
This grading structure means that aiming higher than the minimum pass mark can boost your professional profile. Achieving a Credit or Distinction highlights your strong understanding and application of health and safety management.
Why Does the Pass Mark Matter?
Knowing the pass mark helps you approach your studies strategically. Instead of simply aiming to scrape through, setting your sights on a higher grade can open more opportunities for career development. Employers often recognise candidates who demonstrate advanced knowledge by achieving Credit or Distinction results.
How to Increase Your Chances of Success
- Understand the syllabus: Cover all elements thoroughly rather than focusing only on certain topics.
- Practise exam-style questions: This helps you get used to NEBOSH’s style of questioning.
- Develop strong writing skills: Clear, structured answers score higher marks.
