es. You can complete the full five day SMSTS course online in a live virtual classroom. It delivers the same CITB approved content as a face to face course. You join from home or work using a computer with a camera and microphone. Your tutor teaches in real time and you sit the exam online at the end.

What the online SMSTS covers

The course develops the knowledge and behaviours a site manager needs to run a safe site. It includes legal duties, CDM, risk assessment, method statements, site set up, fire and electrical safety, working at height, temporary works awareness, occupational health, and environmental management. It also builds leadership and communication skills so you can embed safe practice across your team.

How an online SMSTS works

Book a date and receive joining instructions.
Test your device, camera, microphone, and internet connection.
Join the live Zoom or Teams class each day at the set times.
Take part in group work, case studies, and tutor led discussions.
Sit the invigilated online exam on the final day.

You will need a quiet space, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera. A second screen helps with viewing course materials while taking notes.

Is the online certificate accepted

Yes. The certificate you receive after passing the online exam is the same as the classroom version. It is issued by CITB and is recognised by major contractors and accreditation bodies.

Duration and assessment

The standard format is five days delivered over one or two weeks depending on the schedule. The assessment is a multiple choice and short written answer exam taken online with remote invigilation. You also complete course work during the week.

Online vs classroom

Both routes cover the same standards and lead to the same certificate. Online delivery removes travel time and gives more date options. Classroom delivery can suit those who prefer in person interaction. Choose the option that best fits your learning style and diary.

Funding and grants

If your company pays the CITB levy you can usually claim a grant for SMSTS on completion. Check your organisation’s eligibility and keep your attendance and certificate records to support the claim.

Renewal and progression

The SMSTS certificate is valid for five years. You renew with the SMSTS Refresher before expiry. Many managers then progress to higher level qualifications such as NVQs to support Black CSCS Manager Card applications.
