If you’re working in construction management or supervision, you’ve probably heard of SMSTS. But how SMSTS training work, and why is it so important?
At Target Zero Training, we deliver industry-recognised CITB SMSTS courses that help you meet legal responsibilities and lead safer, more effective construction sites.
Let’s break it down.
What Is SMSTS Training?
SMSTS stands for Site Management Safety Training Scheme. It’s a five-day course developed by CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) for those managing construction projects.
The course is designed to ensure managers understand their health and safety responsibilities under UK law — particularly the CDM Regulations (2015), Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), and risk management practices.
How SMSTS Training Works – Step by Step
1. Choose Your Course Format
You can take the SMSTS course either in person at one of our nationwide centres or online via Zoom, with live trainer-led sessions.
2. Learn Over Five Days
The course is usually spread over five consecutive days, though we also offer weekend and split-week options. Each day covers different core topics, such as:
- Legal and management duties
- Risk assessments and method statements
- Site setup, welfare, and fire safety
- Toolbox talks and communication
- Environmental protection
- Working at height, PPE, and COSHH
3. Interactive Learning
Expect a mix of case studies, group discussions, exercises, and real-life scenarios. It’s not death-by-PowerPoint — we keep it practical and relevant to your site.
4. Final Assessment
At the end, you’ll take a 25-question exam (multiple choice and short written answers). You need at least 81% to pass.
5. Certification
Once you pass, you’ll receive a CITB-accredited certificate, valid for five years. It shows clients and employers you’re qualified to manage safety on site.
Who Needs SMSTS Training?
This course is ideal if you’re:
- A site manager or project manager
- A site supervisor progressing into management
- A client, contractor, or company director responsible for site safety
- Managing multiple teams, trades, or high-risk activities
It’s also a legal and contractual requirement on many construction projects across the UK.
Why SMSTS Training Matters
- Protect your team – Proper management reduces accidents and incidents.
- Stay compliant – Avoid costly HSE investigations and enforcement.
- Win contracts – Many clients demand SMSTS-trained managers on site.
