Your CSCS card is your ticket to site. Without a valid one, most UK construction sites won’t let you through the gate. So when your card is coming up for renewal, or has already expired, getting it sorted quickly is essential.
This guide explains exactly how to renew your CSCS card in 2026, what you need before you start, how much it costs, and what to do if your card has already expired. We also cover what happens when a straightforward renewal isn’t the right option, and when you might need to upgrade your card instead.

When can you renew your CSCS card?
CSCS cards can be renewed from six months before the expiry date printed on your card, and up to one year after the card has expired. That gives you an 18-month window in total to process a renewal without having to start from scratch.
If your card expired more than a year ago, a standard renewal is no longer possible. You will need to reapply as if it were a new application, which typically means passing the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test again and providing evidence of your current qualifications.
The best approach is to set a reminder six months before your expiry date. That gives you enough time to complete any required training, pass the HS&E test if needed, and submit your renewal without any gap in card validity.
What you need to renew
What you need depends on the card you hold and how you are renewing it. In most cases, to renew a CSCS card you will need:
- A valid, in-date CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test pass, passed within the last two years
- Evidence of your current qualification (a scanned copy or clear photo of your certificate)
- Payment of the £36 application fee (by debit or credit card)
- Access to the My CSCS app (available on iOS and Android) or CSCS Online if you are an employer
Some card types have additional requirements. Professionally Qualified Person cards require current proof of professional body membership every time you apply. Academically Qualified Person cards require a copy of your qualification certificate each time, as the card now shows the specific title of your degree or HNC/HND rather than a broad category.
If you are unsure which test level you need or whether your existing qualification still supports your card, use the CSCS Card Finder on the official CSCS website to check before you apply.
How to renew your CSCS card: step by step
Step 1: Check your expiry date and renewal window
Find the expiry date on your current CSCS card. You can renew from six months before this date. If you are within the renewal window, proceed to step 2. If your card expired more than 12 months ago, see the section below on what to do if your card has already expired.
Step 2: Book and pass the HS&E test (if required)
Most CSCS card renewals require a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass within the last two years. The test level depends on your card type:
- Operative level: for Green (Labourer) cards
- Specialist level: for Blue (Skilled Worker) cards in many trades
- Supervisory level: for Gold (Supervisor) cards
- Managerial level: for Black (Manager) cards
If you already have a valid test pass (within the last two years), you can skip straight to step 3.
The HS&E test is booked directly through CITB, not through CSCS. You can book at citb.co.uk. The test is 45 minutes long, computer-based, and available at test centres across the UK.
Step 3: Gather your qualification evidence
Have a scanned copy or clear photograph of your qualification certificate ready to upload. For most skilled worker and management cards, this means your NVQ certificate or equivalent. For supervisor cards, this is typically your SSSTS certificate or relevant NVQ. The My CSCS app’s AI will confirm exactly what evidence it needs once you begin your application.
Step 4: Download the My CSCS app
The quickest and easiest way to renew as an individual is through the My CSCS app, available on Google Play and the App Store. The app guides you through the application, confirms the right card type for your role, and lets you upload your qualification evidence directly. Once approved, your digital CSCS card is available on the app immediately.
Step 5: Complete your renewal application
Open the My CSCS app and select the option to renew your card. You will need:
- Your CITB HS&E test pass ID number (printed at the top of your pass certificate)
- Your qualification certificate (uploaded via the app)
- Payment of £36 by debit or credit card
The app uses AI to verify your qualification and recommend the correct card. Once submitted and approved, your digital card is accessible straight away.
Step 6: Receive your card
Your digital CSCS card is available immediately on the My CSCS app once your application is approved. A physical card will be posted to you. Most site managers and employers now accept the digital card on the app, so in most cases you can return to site without waiting for the physical card to arrive.
How much does it cost to renew a CSCS card?
The CSCS card application fee is £36 for all individual card renewals. This is paid directly to CSCS when you submit your application through the My CSCS app or CSCS Online.
In addition to the card fee, if you need to resit the CITB HS&E test, there is a separate test fee payable to CITB. The test fee varies depending on the level, so check the current rates on the CITB website when booking.
If your card has lapsed and you need to complete refresher training before renewing, such as an SMSTS refresher if you hold a Black Manager card or an SSSTS refresher for a Gold Supervisor card, this is an additional training cost to factor in. Target Zero Training offers SMSTS Refresher and SSSTS Refresher courses at venues across the UK and online.
What if your CSCS card has already expired?
If your card expired within the last 12 months, you can still renew using the standard process above. CSCS accepts renewals up to one year after the expiry date.
If your card expired more than a year ago, a renewal is not possible. You will need to apply for a new card from scratch, which means:
- Passing the CITB HS&E test at the appropriate level
- Providing evidence of your current qualifications
- Paying the standard £36 application fee
During any period where your card is not valid, you may be refused entry to construction sites. If your card has recently lapsed and you need to get back on site quickly, the priority is to book and pass the HS&E test as soon as possible, as this is often the longest step in the process.
It is also worth checking whether your qualification still supports the card level you were previously holding. If your circumstances have changed, for example if you have moved into a supervisory role, it may be time to apply for a higher-tier card rather than simply renewing the old one. See the section below on when you need a new card instead of a renewal.
When you need a new card, not a renewal
A renewal assumes you are applying for the same card you currently hold, at the same level, for the same type of work. There are situations where a renewal is not the right option:
- You have changed job role. CSCS requires you to hold the correct card for your current occupation. If you have moved into a supervisory or management role since your last card was issued, you will need to apply for the appropriate card for your new role rather than renewing your old one.
- You have gained a new qualification. If you have completed an NVQ since your last card was issued, you may now be eligible for a higher-tier card. A Blue Skilled Worker card holder who has completed a Level 3 NVQ, for example, should be applying for a Gold Supervisor card.
- The scheme rules have changed. CSCS updates its card requirements periodically. The Card Finder on the CSCS website will confirm the current requirements for your occupation and whether your existing qualification still supports the card you want.
If you are unsure whether to renew or upgrade, the CSCS Card Finder is the most reliable starting point. If you need help identifying which qualification would unlock the card level you are working towards, our team at Target Zero Training can advise on the right NVQ route.
Renewal requirements by card type
Different CSCS cards have different renewal requirements. Here is a summary of what each level typically requires:
Green Labourer Card
Requires a valid CITB HS&E test pass at operative level and evidence of the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course, also known as the HSA course). Target Zero Training delivers the CITB HSA course at venues across the UK and online.
Blue Skilled Worker Card
Requires a valid CITB HS&E test at the appropriate level and evidence of a trade NVQ or equivalent at Level 2 or Level 3. Target Zero Training offers a full range of NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 trade qualifications covering bricklaying, tiling, plastering, carpentry, groundworks and many more.
Gold Supervisor Card
Requires a valid CITB HS&E test at supervisory level and either an NVQ Level 3 in a construction-related subject or a current SSSTS or SMSTS certificate (depending on occupation). If your SSSTS certificate has expired (valid for five years), you will need to complete an SSSTS Refresher before renewing your Gold card.
Black Manager Card
Requires a valid CITB HS&E test at managerial level and evidence of a relevant qualification at Level 6 or above, typically an NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management, or a current, in-date SMSTS certificate. If your SMSTS has expired (valid for five years), you will need to complete an SMSTS Refresher before renewing your Black card.
White Academically Qualified Person Card
Requires a copy of your degree, HND or HNC certificate each time you apply. The card now shows the specific qualification title, so CSCS requires fresh evidence with every application.
Yellow Professionally Qualified Person Card
Requires current proof of membership with your relevant professional body at each application, as memberships are subject to annual renewal.
How long does renewal take?
If you apply through the My CSCS app and your qualification evidence is accepted, your digital card is available immediately on the app once the application is approved. Most straightforward renewals are processed quickly.
A physical card will be posted to you after approval. For planning purposes, allow up to 10 working days for the physical card to arrive, though many site managers and employers now accept the digital card displayed on the My CSCS app.
The part of the process that takes longest is usually completing any required training. If you need to pass the HS&E test or complete a refresher course before you can apply, factor in the lead time for booking a test centre slot and completing your training. The HS&E test can often be booked within a few days at most test centres. SMSTS and SSSTS Refresher courses can be completed within one to two days depending on format.
Renewing cards for your team
If you are an employer managing CSCS card renewals for multiple workers, you should use CSCS Online rather than the My CSCS app. CSCS Online provides an employer account that allows you to manage applications and renewals for your workforce in one place.
For teams where multiple cards are expiring around the same time, proactive planning is essential. Check expiry dates across your workforce regularly. A lapsed card can mean a worker is unable to access site, which causes disruption and cost.
If your workers need refresher training before their cards can be renewed, Target Zero Training offers group bookings for SMSTS Refresher and SSSTS Refresher courses at all our venues and online. Speak to our team about arranging training for multiple delegates.
Frequently Asked Questions
How early can I renew my CSCS card?
You can renew your CSCS card from six months before the expiry date printed on your current card. Renewing early means there is no gap in your card’s validity and you have plenty of time to complete any required training before your current card runs out.
Can I renew a CSCS card that has already expired?
Yes, as long as it expired within the last 12 months. CSCS accepts renewal applications for up to one year after the expiry date. If your card expired more than a year ago, you will need to apply as a new application rather than a renewal.
Do I need to retake the HS&E test to renew my CSCS card?
Yes, in most cases. Your CITB HS&E test must have been passed within the last two years to be accepted as part of a card renewal. If your test pass is more than two years old, you will need to book and pass the test again before applying. Book through CITB directly at citb.co.uk.
How much does it cost to renew a CSCS card?
The standard card application fee is £36, paid to CSCS when you submit your renewal. If you also need to resit the CITB HS&E test, there is a separate test fee payable to CITB. If you need refresher training before renewing, that is an additional cost depending on the course.
My SMSTS certificate has expired. Can I still renew my Black CSCS card?
Not on the basis of the expired certificate. A valid, in-date SMSTS certificate (or a Level 6+ construction management NVQ) is required to hold a Black Manager CSCS card. If your SMSTS has expired, you will need to complete an SMSTS Refresher course first. The SMSTS Refresher is a two-day course and is the standard route for renewing an expired SMSTS certificate. Once completed, you will have a fresh five-year certificate to support your card renewal.
My SSSTS has expired. Does this affect my Gold card renewal?
It depends on what qualification underpins your Gold card. If your Gold card is based on an SSSTS certificate and that certificate has now expired, you will need to complete an SSSTS Refresher before renewing. The SSSTS certificate is valid for five years. If your Gold card is supported by an NVQ Level 3 qualification, the SSSTS expiry does not directly affect the card renewal.
Can I renew my CSCS card online?
Yes. The My CSCS app is the recommended route for individual cardholders. Download it from Google Play or the App Store, upload your qualification evidence and test pass details, and pay the £36 fee. Employers managing multiple renewals should use the CSCS Online portal instead.
What is the My CSCS app?
The My CSCS app is the official CSCS digital platform for individual cardholders. It allows you to apply for, renew, and access your CSCS card digitally. Once approved, your digital card is available on the app immediately. Many employers and site managers now accept it in place of the physical card. The app is available on iOS and Android.
What happens if I let my CSCS card expire without renewing?
If your card expires, you may be refused entry to construction sites until it is renewed or replaced. You have up to 12 months after expiry to renew. If you miss that window, you will need to go through the full new application process. It is always better to renew before the card expires to avoid any disruption to your work.
I have just completed my NVQ. Should I renew or upgrade my card?
If your new NVQ qualification supports a higher card level than you currently hold, you should apply for the new card rather than simply renewing your existing one. For example, completing an NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management makes you eligible for a Black Manager card. Completing a Level 2 trade NVQ makes you eligible for a Blue Skilled Worker card. Use the CSCS Card Finder to confirm the right card for your new qualification, then apply via the My CSCS app.
