Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 runs from 12–18 May, with this years theme centering around ‘Community’ which marks the vital role that connections and support networks play in our mental wellbeing. In the construction industry, fostering a sense of community is not just beneficial, it’s essential.

The construction sector faces a significant mental health challenge. Recent reports reveal that construction workers are four times more likely to die by suicide than the national average. Over the past decade, 7,000 construction workers have taken their own lives, highlighting the urgent need for mental health support within the industry.

Factors contributing to this crisis include:

    • Long and irregular working hours
    • High pressure environments
    • Job insecurity and the physical demands of construction work.
    • A culture that discourages open discussions about mental health.

These elements create a perfect storm, making it essential to address mental health proactively, although things are slowly changing with support from charities such as The Lighthouse Charity championing mental health in construction across the industry.

The ‘Community’ theme of Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 emphasises the importance of belonging and mutual support. In construction, building a community means:

    • Encouraging open conversations about mental health.
    • Providing support systems for workers at all levels.
    • Creating an environment where seeking help is seen as a strength, not a weakness.

By promoting such a community, we can combat the isolation and stigma that often surround mental health issues in the industry.

Implementing Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training is a proactive step towards building this supportive community. MHFA equips individuals with the skills to:

    • Recognise signs of mental health issues.
    • Provide initial support and guide individuals towards appropriate help.
    • Promote a culture of openness and understanding.

At Target Zero, we offer the Mental Health First Aid England Course, designed to empower construction professionals to support their colleagues effectively.

Investing in MHFA training leads to:

    • Improved employee wellbeing and morale.
    • Reduced truancy and increased productivity.
    • Enhanced team cohesion and communication.

By integrating MHFA into your workplace, you’re not just complying with best practices, you’re demonstrating a genuine commitment to your team’s mental health and looking after your employees.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, take the initiative to strengthen your workplace community. Equip your team with the tools they need to support each other.
