    What are ‘temporary works’?

Temporary works are the needed as part of a construction project to enable permanent works to be built and are mostly removed after use.  Temporary works include: access scaffolding, shoring, excavation support and falsework and formwork.  Sometimes Temporary works are incorporated into the permanent works, such as crane or piling platforms used for road foundations.  Like permanent works, they require the same level of safety and attention to detail.

What is the typical job role of a Temporary Works Supervisor?

A Temporary Works Supervisor reports to the Temporary Works Coordinator. They will work together to check and supervise the temporary work and ensure they meet the safety requirements.

A Temporary Works Supervisor will usually be appointed on larger sites or if they are working with a coordinator who has the responsibility for several sites at once. The supervisor will have responsibility and focus on their particular temporary works.

While there is no legal requirement to have a Temporary Works Coordinator or supervisor on site, it is required that the those in control of a project are ensuring the work is carried out in a way that does not cause risk or harm to the workers or members of the public.
