The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) is a widely recognised qualification designed to prepare site supervisors with essential health and safety responsibilities. If you’re supervising workers on UK construction sites, having an SSSTS card is more than just a formality — it’s a legal and professional advantage.

What Does SSSTS Mean?
SSSTS stands for Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme. It’s part of CITB’s suite of health and safety training schemes and is often a mandatory requirement for supervisory roles. The two-day course equips candidates with the skills to manage site safety, legal duties, risk assessments, and toolbox talks.
What Is the SSSTS Card?
Once you’ve successfully completed the SSSTS course, you’ll receive a CITB Site Safety Plus certificate. This is commonly referred to as the SSSTS card, although technically, the SSSTS certification should be applied to your CSCS card as proof of supervisor-level training.

How Difficult Is the SSSTS Test?
The SSSTS test is straightforward if you’ve paid attention throughout the two-day course. It includes 25 multiple choice questions and some written questions. You need a pass mark of at least 80%.
What Are the 4 Safety Critical Questions in SSSTS?
These are commonly asked during the SSSTS assessment or interviews. While they vary slightly, they typically revolve around:
- Risk assessments
- Method statements
- Toolbox talks
- Emergency procedures
Do You Need a Refresher?
The SSSTS certificate lasts for 5 years. If it’s expiring, the 1-day SSSTS Refresher course keeps your certification active without repeating the full course.
What Is a Triple SSSTS?
While not an official term by CITB, “Triple SSSTS” sometimes refers to workers who’ve completed SSSTS multiple times across contract jobs. It reflects experience and up-to-date safety knowledge.
