Gain Your Blue Card with Target Zero Training
The National Water Hygiene EUSR Blue Card is an essential credential for anyone who enters clean water sites or works on the clean water network. At Target Zero Training, we specialise in preparing individuals for safe and compliant work within drinking water environments. Our training is trusted across the sector and is recognised by water companies throughout the United Kingdom.
This page explains what the National Water Hygiene qualification is, why the EUSR Blue Card matters for employment, and what to expect from your training with us.
What is the EUSR Water Hygiene Course?
The National Water Hygiene Course provides essential knowledge for anyone who works with potable water infrastructure. The aim of this training is to help you understand your responsibility in protecting drinking water quality and safeguarding public health.
The scheme was developed in partnership with all UK water companies and remains the national standard for safe working practices on Restricted Operations sites. Successful completion results in an EUSR registration and a Blue ID Card issued through the Energy and Utility Skills Register with a three year validity period.
Who Needs the EUSR Blue Card
The content gives you a practical understanding of how the clean water network operates, how contamination can occur, and how to prevent it. The core modules include:
• The importance of water in modern society
• Waterborne disease and how illness can spread
• Sources of contamination and associated consequences
• Personal hygiene, protective measures and contamination control
By the end of the course you will understand the legal, environmental and public health context and your personal responsibilities when working on the clean water network.
Who Needs the EUSR Blue Card
All water companies in the UK require workers who enter Restricted Operations environments to hold a valid National Water Hygiene EUSR registration. This includes anyone who works on or enters:
• Service reservoirs
• Water pumping stations
• Water treatment works
• Wells
• Springs
• Boreholes
• Water mains and associated service pipes
This requirement applies to utility workers, contractors, sub contractors, maintenance teams, civil engineering operatives and anyone who performs tasks that could impact potable water quality.
If you intend to build a career in the water sector or work on utility infrastructure, the Blue Card is a key entry requirement for employment and site access.
Course Outcome and Certification
After completing the assessment you will receive a National Water Hygiene EUSR photo ID card also known as the Blue Card. Your record will be added to the Energy and Utility Skills Register and will remain valid for three years. Renewal is required to maintain ongoing competence and site access compliance.
Eligibility and Health Screening
All delegates must have a good understanding of spoken and written English to ensure that safety and technical requirements are fully understood. You will also be required to complete a short health screening questionnaire confirming that you are not carrying diseases that could transfer into clean water systems.
