If you’ve recently started a construction role or enrolled on an NVQ qualification, you might be wondering:
Can I work with a temporary CSCS card?
The short answer is yes, but only under certain conditions. In this post, we’ll break down what a temporary CSCS card is, who can apply, how long it’s valid for, and how you can use it to start working legally on-site while completing your qualification.
What Is a Temporary CSCS Card?
The Temporary CSCS Card—also known as the Experienced Worker Card or Provisional Card—is designed for workers who don’t yet hold a full NVQ or qualification but are actively working towards one.
It allows you to gain site access legally and safely, giving you time to complete your training.
Who Can Get a Temporary CSCS Card?
You can apply for a temporary CSCS card if you meet all three of these conditions:
- You have significant experience in your job role
- You have enrolled onto an NVQ or SVQ relevant to your occupation
- You have passed the appropriate CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test within the last 2 years
For example, if you’re an experienced site supervisor now working towards the NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management, you can apply for a temporary Supervisor Card while you complete your course.
Can I Work with a Temporary CSCS Card?
Yes, you can work on-site with a valid temporary CSCS card, as long as it matches the role you’re doing. This includes:
- Site labourers
- Skilled workers
- Supervisors
- Senior site managers
It’s important to note: temporary cards are time-limited and non-renewable. You’ll need to complete your NVQ and apply for the appropriate full CSCS card (e.g. Blue, Gold, or Black) before the temporary card expires.
How Long Does a Temporary CSCS Card Last?
Temporary CSCS cards are usually valid for 6 months. During that time, you’re expected to:
- Continue working safely on site
- Complete your NVQ qualification
- Upgrade to a full CSCS card once you’re qualified
What Happens When It Expires?
Temporary CSCS cards cannot be renewed. Once it expires, you must have completed your qualification and applied for the appropriate full CSCS card. Failing to do so may prevent you from working legally on site.
