Telehandlers are a fixed part of UK construction, agriculture, and logistics operations. Operating one without proper training puts you, your colleagues, and your site at risk. The NPORS Telehandler course (N010) provides the recognised qualification you need to operate a telehandler safely on UK sites.
This guide covers what the N010 course involves, who it suits, how the assessment works, and how to get your NPORS card.
What Is the NPORS Telehandler Course (N010)?
The NPORS N010 is a plant operator training and assessment course for telescopic handler operation. NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) is one of the two main plant certification schemes on UK construction sites. The other is CPCS.
The N010 course covers the safe operation of telescopic handlers in a range of working conditions. It applies to wheeled telehandlers used in construction, civil engineering, agricultural, and industrial settings.
What Does the NPORS Telehandler Course Cover?
Specifically, the N010 course content includes:
- Pre-operational checks following manufacturer guidelines and current legislation
- Safe mounting, dismounting, and operator positioning
- Starting, stopping, and manoeuvring the machine on different surfaces
- Understanding load charts, rated capacities, and centre of gravity
- Lifting, placing, and stacking loads safely
- Use of attachments including forks, buckets, and man baskets where applicable
- Working on slopes and uneven terrain
- Travelling with a raised load and the associated stability risks
- Working near overhead services, excavations, and site boundaries
- End-of-shift shutdown and securing procedures
The course places particular emphasis on load stability. Telehandler incidents frequently involve overturning or dropped loads. Understanding the machine’s load chart and working within rated capacities is therefore a core competency throughout.
How Is the NPORS Telehandler Assessment Structured?
The NPORS N010 assessment has two parts:
Theory test — Multiple choice and open questions covering legislation, safety procedures, pre-operational checks, and machine operation principles. You sit this test with your assessor either on paper or digitally depending on your training provider.
Practical assessment — Your assessor observes you operating the telehandler through a set of tasks. These include pre-operational checks, travelling with and without a load, lifting to height, placing loads accurately, and shutting down the machine correctly. You must demonstrate safe, competent operation throughout.
You must pass both parts to receive your NPORS card.
Who Should Take the NPORS Telehandler Course?
In practice, the N010 course suits two groups of operators.
Novice operators with no previous telehandler experience attend the full training course before assessment. The number of training days depends on your starting ability. Your training provider determines this after an initial discussion about your experience. Most novice operators complete training in two to four days before the assessment day.
Experienced operators with verifiable telehandler experience can attend a shorter Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA). To qualify for the EWA route, you need at least 18 months of verifiable telehandler experience, or six months of consistent daily operation. The EWA is typically completed in one day.

NPORS Card Options After Passing
After passing the N010 assessment, you choose between two card types.
The Traditional NPORS card is accepted on private sites, agricultural land, and any environment that does not require the CSCS logo. It is the right choice for operators working exclusively in those settings.
The NPORS CSCS card carries the CSCS logo and is accepted on the vast majority of UK construction sites, including those operated by Build UK members and principal contractors. To qualify for the NPORS CSCS card, you need a valid CITB Health, Safety and Environmental (HS&E) touchscreen test pass within the previous two years.
Both card types begin as a Red Trained Operator card, valid for two years. Within those two years, completing a relevant NVQ (typically a Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations) allows you to upgrade to a Blue Competent Operator card, which is valid for five years. For a full comparison of the two card schemes, see our guide to NPORS vs CPCS: which card do you need?
Why Choose NPORS for Telehandler Training?
NPORS offers a significant practical advantage over CPCS for telehandler training. NPORS allows training and assessment to take place at your own site using your own machine. This removes travel time and accommodation costs, and means the assessor evaluates operators on equipment they already know.
CPCS telehandler assessments must take place at an accredited CPCS test centre. Depending on your location, this can involve significant travel and time away from site.
Both NPORS CSCS cards and CPCS cards carry the CSCS logo and meet the Construction Leadership Council’s one-logo policy. Build UK, CECA, and most principal contractors recognise both card types.
How to Book NPORS Telehandler Training With Target Zero
Target Zero Training offers NPORS plant operator courses across a wide range of categories including the Telehandler (N010). Training is available nationwide with flexible scheduling. On-site assessment is available for employers training multiple operators at once, reducing cost and disruption.
Target Zero holds a 4.9 out of 5.0 rating on both Trustpilot and Reviews.io, with over 10,000 reviews collectively across all training courses. To check availability or book your telehandler training, call 01245 379496 or email sales@targetzerogroup.co.uk.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the NPORS telehandler course?
Experienced operators with qualifying experience typically complete the Experienced Worker Assessment in one day. Novice operators attend a full training course first, usually two to four days depending on their starting level, followed by the assessment day.
Do I need a licence to drive a telehandler on a construction site?
There is no statutory licence requirement for telehandler operation in the UK. However, principal contractors and site managers typically require operators to hold a recognised plant card such as NPORS or CPCS before allowing them to operate on site.
Can I be assessed on my own telehandler?
Yes. NPORS permits on-site assessment using the machine you operate daily. This is one of the key advantages over CPCS, which requires assessment at an accredited test centre.
Is the NPORS telehandler card accepted on all construction sites?
The NPORS CSCS card carries the CSCS logo and most UK construction sites recognise it. However, some Tier 1 contractors specify CPCS in their site requirements. Check with your employer or the site’s principal contractor if you are unsure which scheme applies.
Do I need the CITB HS&E test for an NPORS telehandler card?
You need a valid CITB HS&E touchscreen test pass to receive the NPORS CSCS card with the CSCS logo. If you only need the Traditional NPORS card, the HS&E test is not required.
What is the difference between a telehandler and a forklift?
A telehandler has a telescopic boom that extends forward and upward, giving it greater reach and lifting height than a standard counterbalance forklift. Telehandlers are more versatile on uneven ground and at height but require different handling techniques, particularly regarding load stability when the boom is extended. They are separate NPORS categories and require separate assessment and cards.
