    When You Book Multiple Courses.

Qualify By Booking Multiple Places Or Courses. Book With Friends Or Your Team.

The SMSTS certificate lasts five years. Then comes the question that catches half of construction professionals out: do I need to take the full course again, or is the 2-day Refresher enough?

The honest answer is simple, and it comes down to one question: is your certificate still in date? This guide gives you a 60-second decision flow, the actual CITB rules, and shows you why booking with Target Zero gives you the best chance of a first-time pass either way (98% on both formats).

    Quick answer (decision flow)

Look at your existing SMSTS certificate. Then:

    Your situationWhat you need
Certificate is still in date (you took it within the last 5 years and it has not expired)SMSTS Refresher (2 days) with Target Zero
Certificate has expired (even by 1 day)Full SMSTS (5 days) with Target Zero
You have never taken SMSTS beforeFull SMSTS (5 days) with Target Zero

The rule is unambiguous. CITB does not run a grace period after expiry. Even one day past the expiry date and you must take the full 5-day SMSTS again, not the Refresher. The best move is to book your Refresher 3 months before expiry so a date clash or unexpected work commitment cannot push you past the deadline.

When SMSTS Refresher is the right course

The Target Zero SMSTS Refresher is designed for site managers who already have a valid SMSTS certificate and need to:

    • Renew their certificate for the next 5 years.
    • Catch up on regulatory changes since they last sat the full course.
    • Reinforce their working practice with current best-practice examples.

You are eligible for the Refresher if your certificate is still in date at the time you sit the course. That is the only requirement. You should also be staying in a site management role, because the Refresher assumes ongoing site experience between qualifications.

When you need to take Full SMSTS instead

The full Target Zero SMSTS (5 days) is required if:

    • You have never held an SMSTS certificate before. Refresher is not a fast-track entry route, it is a renewal.
    • Your certificate has expired, even by 1 day. CITB does not allow Refresher entry once a certificate has lapsed.
    • You are moving into site management from a different role and need the full grounding.

There is no shame in taking the full course even if you are technically eligible for the Refresher. Some site managers prefer the deeper week because regulations have changed meaningfully over the 5-year period. Either way, 98% of Target Zero learners pass first time.

SMSTS expiry rules: the CITB framework

The headline rule is simple. SMSTS certificates are valid for 5 years from the date you completed the course. After that, the certificate expires, and so does your eligibility for the Refresher.

    In practice this means:

    • In date. You can book the Refresher. Best practice is to book it 3 months before expiry so an unexpected work commitment cannot push you past the deadline.
    • Expired. The full 5-day SMSTS, every time. There is no grace period, even by a single day.
    • If your certificate has expired, your formal SMSTS-trained status has expired with it. Employers should not be assigning you site management duties that require SMSTS until you have renewed.

Always check the expiry date on your physical certificate (or your CITB Health, Safety & Environment portal) before booking. It is an avoidable mistake to book a Refresher and then discover at induction that you needed the full course.

Cost & time: Target Zero vs the alternative

The Refresher exam is structurally similar to the full SMSTS exam (same 25 questions, same 81% pass mark, same 35 minutes). The real difference is in the learning time leading up to it: 5 days of taught content for the full SMSTS, 2 days for the Refresher. The Refresher assumes you already know the regulatory framework and gives you a structured update rather than a from-scratch grounding.

The Refresher is lower-cost than the full course at Target Zero, and the time-off-work saving is even bigger if you are an employer booking for a team. Either booking comes with expert site-experienced instructors, 0% deposit booking through Klarna’s 3 interest-free payments, and 10% off when you book with a friend or team.

    A word on employer-booked teams

If you are an employer renewing multiple site managers, the Refresher route saves substantial money and downtime. Three quick tips when booking team renewals with Target Zero:

Check every team member’s certificate is still in date. The CITB rule has no grace period, so a certificate that expires the week before your scheduled Refresher means that person needs the full 5-day course instead.

Closed on-site bookings (we come to your premises) work well for teams of 6 or more. Often cheaper per head than individual classroom bookings, and zero travel time.

Renewing several people at the same time keeps your team’s certificates aligned, simplifying future renewals.

    What to do now

If you are not sure which course you need:

    • Find your certificate and check the expiry date.
    • Use the decision table at the top of this guide.

If you are still unsure, particularly around the 12-month lapse threshold, call the Target Zero team before booking. We would rather you book the right course than the wrong one.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to take SMSTS Refresher?

Every 5 years. The Refresher renews your SMSTS certificate for another 5-year cycle. As long as you stay on the renewal pattern at Target Zero, you will never need to retake the full 5-day course again.

    When does my SMSTS expire?

SMSTS certificates expire 5 years from the date you completed the course. The expiry date is printed on your physical certificate and shown in your CITB Health, Safety & Environment portal.

Can I do SMSTS Refresher if my certificate has already expired?

No. CITB does not allow Refresher entry once a certificate has expired, even by a single day. If your SMSTS has lapsed you will need to retake the full 5-day course. The best move is to book your Refresher 3 months before expiry so this never happens. Target Zero offers both courses with 0% deposit booking.

How long does SMSTS Refresher take?

2 days. The Target Zero Refresher condenses the renewal essentials (regulatory updates, working-practice refresh, and the renewal assessment) into a fraction of the full course’s time.

Is SMSTS Refresher cheaper than full SMSTS?

Yes. The Refresher is shorter (2 days vs 5 days) so it costs less than the full course. Both Target Zero courses are bookable with a 0% deposit through Klarna’s 3 interest-free payments, and you get 10% off when you book with a friend or team.

What is the difference in the assessment between Full SMSTS and Refresher?

The exam itself is the same on paper: 25 questions (18 multiple-choice and 7 written), 35 minutes long, with the GE700 reference textbook permitted as open book for the final 15 minutes. The pass mark is 81% for both. The real difference is in the 2 vs 5 days of taught content leading up to the exam — the Refresher assumes you already hold a valid certificate and gives you a regulatory update rather than teaching the framework from scratch.
