In the fast-paced world of construction, temporary works often go unnoticed—until something goes wrong. These essential structures support or protect permanent works during construction, yet they remain one of the most misunderstood and high-risk areas on site.
Whether you are a supervisor, coordinator, or contractor, understanding and managing safely is critical.
What Are Temporary Works?
These are any parts of a construction project required to enable the permanent works to be built but are not part of the final structure. Examples include:
- Scaffolding
- Falsework and formwork
- Shoring and propping
- Hoardings
- Temporary access roads
- Site fencing
Improper design, installation, inspection, or dismantling of temporary works can lead to major incidents, structural collapse, and legal consequences.
Who Needs Temporary Works Training?
The BS 5975:2019 code of practice sets out the responsibilities for those managing. There are three key roles where formal training is recommended:
Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC)
Responsible for managing the overall implementation of procedures on site. Coordinators ensure proper planning, communication, and compliance.
Temporary Works Coordinator Refresher
Those with an existing TWC qualification should complete a refresher before expiry to remain compliant and up to date.
Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS)
Supervisors monitor operations on site and report concerns or issues to the coordinator. They play a vital role in ensuring day-to-day compliance.
Why Is This Training Important?
Legal Compliance
Formal training ensures adherence to HSE regulations and the CDM framework.
Risk Management
Proper training significantly reduces the chance of incidents.
Project Efficiency
Clear procedures lead to better communication, fewer delays, and improved site safety.
Career Development
Training is increasingly recognised as essential for site managers, supervisors, and engineers.
