If you are a working carpenter, the honest answer to “how do I get my NVQ” is simpler than most people expect: you do not go back to college, you do not sit in a classroom, and you do not stop earning. A carpentry NVQ is assessed from the work you already do on site. This guide explains exactly how the process works at Level 2 and Level 3, how long it takes, and which CSCS card each level unlocks.

How to get your carpentry NVQ: the short answer

You register with a training provider, you are assigned an assessor, and you build a portfolio of evidence from your day-to-day site work: photos, videos, work records and professional discussions. Your assessor reviews the evidence against the national standard for site carpentry, and once every unit is signed off, the qualification is awarded. With us the whole process is completed remotely, with no time off site and no loss of earnings.

Level 2 or Level 3: which carpentry NVQ do you need?

The Level 2 NVQ (Wood Occupations, Site Carpentry) is for carpenters who can carry out first and second fix work competently under normal supervision. It is the qualification that earns the Blue Skilled Worker CSCS card, the standard proof of skilled status on UK sites.

The Level 3 NVQ (Wood Occupations, Site Carpentry) is for experienced carpenters working on complex tasks on their own initiative, often setting out and checking the work of others. It earns the Gold Advanced Craft CSCS card, increasingly requested for senior trade roles. If you already hold a Blue card and years of experience, Level 3 is usually the right move; you do not need to do Level 2 first if your experience supports direct entry at Level 3.

    What the assessment actually involves

    • Enrolment and induction: you register, and your assessor plans which units your current work will evidence.
    • Evidence gathering: photos and video of your work, site documents, witness statements and professional discussions with your assessor. Collected while you work, not instead of working.
    • Assessment and sign-off: your assessor maps the evidence to the qualification units and signs each off as it is proven.
    • Certification: the NVQ is awarded through Pearson, one of the UK’s largest OFQUAL-regulated awarding organisations.

How long does a carpentry NVQ take?

It depends on how quickly evidence can be gathered from your workload, but most working carpenters complete a Level 2 NVQ in a few months. Level 3 typically takes a little longer because the units demand more complex work. Because assessment is remote and evidence-led, motivated candidates with busy sites often finish faster.

    What about the CSCS card?

The NVQ is the qualification half of the card application. You will also need to pass the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, then apply to CSCS. Our step-by-step CSCS card guide covers that side of the process.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I get a carpentry NVQ without going to college?

Yes. The NVQ is assessed entirely from your work on site. There is no classroom attendance and no exams in the traditional sense.

How do I get an NVQ Level 3 in carpentry if I never did Level 2?

If your experience supports it, you can enrol directly at Level 3. Your assessor confirms at induction whether your current work will generate Level 3 evidence.

Is a carpentry NVQ worth it?

If you want the Blue or Gold CSCS card, it is essentially the route. Beyond the card, it formalises your experience into a nationally recognised qualification that follows you between employers.

What is a Level 3 carpentry NVQ equivalent to?

Level 3 qualifications sit at the same level as A levels on the national framework. See our guide to what NVQ Level 3 is equivalent to.
