Passing the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test is a non-negotiable step for almost every CSCS card. The good news is that the test is designed to be passed on the first sitting if you revise properly. The better news is that all the revision material you actually need is available for free.

This guide cuts through the paid-course noise and shows you exactly where to find free, up-to-date CSCS test revision materials, how to structure your prep, and what to expect on test day.

    What is the CSCS test?

The CSCS test is the common name for the CITB Health, Safety and Environment touch screen test. It is a computer-based assessment of your knowledge of construction site safety, environmental awareness, and occupational hazards. Passing it is a prerequisite for most CSCS cards, including the Green Labourer, Blue Skilled Worker, Gold Supervisor, Black Manager, and White Professional cards.

The test lasts 45 minutes and contains 50 questions. You need 45 out of 50 correct to pass. Questions are drawn from a published bank, so thorough revision gives you a realistic chance of a first-time pass.

How to revise for the CSCS test for free

There are four free revision methods that cover everything you need. Used together, they replicate the full learning experience of a paid revision course at no cost.

    Free CSCS mock tests

The single most useful revision tool is a free mock test that mirrors the real exam. Target Zero runs free CITB HS&E mock tests that replicate the question style, timing, and pass mark of the real thing. Run through a full mock, review every question you missed, and repeat until you score above 45 out of 50 consistently.

Mock tests work because they train two things at once: your factual knowledge and your exam technique. Reading questions quickly, managing the 45-minute clock, and identifying the trick wording that catches candidates out are all skills you only develop through practice.

    CITB revision materials

CITB publishes the official revision materials that all questions are drawn from. The CITB Revision Hub offers the Operatives book, the Managers and Professionals book, and the behavioural case study videos. Buying physical copies costs around 10 to 15 pounds, but free extracts and sample questions are available through the CITB website.

If you are preparing for the MAP (Managers and Professionals) version of the test, the behavioural case study videos are essential. Around 8 of the 50 MAP test questions are based on these videos, and you cannot answer them reliably without watching.

    YouTube walkthroughs

Free YouTube channels run through every topic in the syllabus with real exam-style questions and explanations. Search for CITB HS&E test walkthroughs and filter by upload date within the last 12 months to make sure the content reflects the current question bank.

Focus on channels that explain the reasoning behind each answer, not just the correct option. On the real test, questions often rephrase familiar scenarios, so understanding the underlying safety principle matters more than memorising answers.

    Free revision apps

Several free apps on the App Store and Google Play offer practice questions offline. The official CITB Revision app is the most reliable, although it includes paid content. Free apps work well for filling spare time on the train or in the van, but should not be your only revision method.

Which CSCS test do I need to sit?

There are three main versions of the CITB HS&E test.

Operatives test: For labourers, skilled workers, and trades. Required for the Green Labourer, Red Apprentice, Red Trainee, and Blue Skilled Worker cards.

Specialist test: For specific trades such as demolition, highway works, or tunnelling. Covers the Operatives syllabus plus specialist content.

Managers and Professionals (MAP) test: For supervisors, site managers, and construction professionals. Required for the Gold Supervisor, Black Manager, and White Academically Qualified Person cards. Includes behavioural case study questions.

Make sure you revise for the right version. A Gold or Black card applicant who turns up having revised the Operatives book will struggle with the behavioural questions. Our guide to CSCS card types explained shows exactly which test you need for each card.

How long should I spend revising?

For the Operatives test, most candidates need 8 to 15 hours of focused revision spread over two to three weeks. For the MAP test, plan 15 to 25 hours, because the behavioural case studies take longer to absorb.

Short daily sessions beat long weekend cramming. A 30-minute mock test every evening for two weeks is more effective than a single eight-hour session the day before the exam. Your brain consolidates information between sessions, and repeat exposure to the same question formats builds recall speed.

What topics does the CSCS test cover?

The test covers 16 core knowledge areas. On the Operatives test these include general responsibilities, accident reporting, emergency procedures, hazardous substances, manual handling, working at height, plant and equipment, electrical safety, fire prevention, noise and vibration, and environmental awareness.

The MAP test adds behavioural content covering supervision, safe systems of work, risk assessment, and incident response. Questions test how you would act in real site scenarios, not just what the regulations say.

    Top CSCS test revision tips

Beyond the materials, a few techniques consistently separate first-time passers from re-sitters.

Sit timed mocks. Always revise against the 45-minute clock. Running out of time is a common cause of failure and can only be prevented by practice.

Focus on weak areas. After each mock, note the topics where you lost marks and spend 80 percent of the next session on those. Skimming topics you already know is wasted revision.

Read every question twice. The test is written carefully. Small words like not, never, and always change the meaning entirely. A candidate who reads too fast in the first 10 questions often loses marks that would have been easy to get.

Watch the behavioural videos. If you are sitting the MAP test, watch every case study video at least twice before the exam. These questions cannot be answered from a revision book alone.

Book your test for a morning slot. Candidates perform measurably better earlier in the day. If your test centre offers morning slots, take them.

What happens if I fail the CSCS test?

If you fail, you can book a re-sit straight away. There is no waiting period, and the re-sit fee is the same as the original test. Most candidates who fail the first time pass on the second attempt because the experience reveals exactly where their gaps are.

Use the gap between attempts to run through the free mock tests again, focusing on the topics you lost marks on. Two or three days of focused revision is usually enough to move from a 40 out of 50 fail to a comfortable pass.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is the CSCS test hard?

The test is not academically hard, but it catches out candidates who do not revise or who do not read the questions carefully. The first-time pass rate is around 70 percent, which means almost one in three candidates fails. Most failures are down to under-preparation, not the difficulty of the content.

How much does the CSCS test cost?

The CITB HS&E test costs 22.50 pounds for the Operatives version and 22.50 pounds for the MAP version as of 2026. You book it directly through CITB or through an approved test centre. Prices can change, so check the CITB website before booking.

Where can I find free CSCS test questions?

Free CSCS test questions are available through Target Zero’s free mock tests, through YouTube channels that walk through the syllabus, and through the CITB Revision Hub sample content. Avoid unofficial question banks on generic revision sites, because many are out of date.

Can I take the CSCS test online?

Yes. CITB now offers the Home test option, which lets you sit the HS&E test at home using a webcam and remote invigilation. You need a quiet room, a working webcam, and valid photo ID. The alternative is sitting at a Pearson VUE test centre.

How long is the CSCS test result valid for?

A passed CITB HS&E test is valid for two years. You must apply for your CSCS card within that window, or you will need to re-sit the test. If you already hold a CSCS card, the test result is valid for as long as your card is.

Do I need to take the CSCS test again when I renew my card?

Yes, in most cases. Card renewal usually requires a current HS&E test pass within the last two years. The CITB advises taking the test again as part of every renewal, because the syllabus updates regularly.

What is the best way to revise for the MAP test?

The best MAP test revision combines timed mock tests, the CITB Managers and Professionals book, and repeated viewing of the behavioural case study videos. The behavioural questions are the hardest to revise for, so spend the most time on those.
