If you run a construction site, hire subcontractors, or manage a workforce, you need a reliable way to confirm that every worker on site holds a valid CSCS card. A forged or expired card puts site safety, insurance, and legal compliance at risk. The good news is that checking a CSCS card takes under a minute, is completely free, and can be done from your phone.

This guide explains exactly how the official CSCS card checker works, what information you need, what the results mean, and what to do if a card fails verification.

What is the CSCS card checker?

The CSCS card checker is the official online tool run by the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. It lets employers, site managers, and principal contractors verify whether a CSCS card is genuine, currently valid, and registered to the person presenting it. The checker pulls live data from the CSCS database, so results reflect the card’s real-time status.

There are two ways to verify a card: the Go Smart app, which scans the QR code on the back of the card, and the online Card Checker on the CSCS website, which requires manual entry of the registration number.

How to check a CSCS card online

To verify a CSCS card on the official website, you need two pieces of information: the card holder’s registration number and their surname. Both are printed on the card itself.

Visit cscs.uk.com, select the Card Checker option, enter the registration number and surname exactly as they appear on the card, and submit the form. The system returns a result showing the card type, occupation, expiry date, and whether the HS&E test requirement has been met.

    Using the Go Smart app

The Go Smart app is faster than the online checker and works offline after first sync. Download it free from the App Store or Google Play, sign in, and scan the QR code on the back of any CSCS-branded card. The app confirms the card is genuine, shows the holder’s photo, and lists their qualifications and endorsements.

Go Smart also checks cards from other CSCS Alliance schemes, including NPORS, CPCS, EUSR, and JIB/ECS. This makes it the best option for mixed-trade sites where workers hold cards from different schemes.

What information do I need to check a card?

The minimum information required is the registration number and the card holder’s surname. The registration number is an eight-digit code printed on the front of the card, usually beside the photo. Enter both exactly as shown, including any leading zeros, and the system matches them against the CSCS database.

If you are using Go Smart, you only need the card itself. The app reads the QR code and returns the same information automatically.

What do the card checker results mean?

The checker returns one of three main results.

Valid: The card is genuine, currently in date, and registered to the person named. You can accept the card as proof of qualification for the occupation shown.

Expired: The card was genuine but has passed its expiry date. The holder must renew before working in a role that requires a current CSCS card. Our CSCS card renewal guide explains the process step by step.

Not found: No record exists for the combination of registration number and surname entered. This usually means either a typing error or a counterfeit card. Re-enter the details carefully before raising a concern.

Is the CSCS card checker free?

Yes. Both the online Card Checker and the Go Smart app are free to use, with no registration required and no limit on the number of checks you can run. CSCS provides the service to help employers and principal contractors meet their duty to verify competence under CDM 2015.

How often should I check CSCS cards on site?

The industry standard is to verify every card at site induction and to spot-check at least once more before the worker leaves the project. For long-running sites, many principal contractors build quarterly re-checks into their audit schedule. This catches cards that expire mid-project and any workers who have changed roles since induction.

A proper check protects your business in three ways. It confirms the worker is qualified for the task, keeps the site compliant with CDM 2015 competence requirements, and provides an audit trail if an incident occurs.

What if a CSCS card fails verification?

If the checker returns Not Found after you have double-checked the details, treat the card as invalid until proven otherwise. Do not allow the worker onto productive tasks that require a card. Ask to see alternative qualification evidence, such as an NVQ certificate, and contact CSCS directly on 0344 994 4777 to report the card.

Counterfeit cards are a criminal offence under the Fraud Act 2006. Employers who knowingly accept forged cards can face prosecution, loss of insurance cover, and removal from principal contractor frameworks.

Which CSCS card types can I check?

Every CSCS-branded card type can be verified through the checker, including the Green Labourer Card, Blue Skilled Worker Card, Gold Supervisor Card, Black Manager Card, White Academically Qualified Person Card, and the Red temporary cards. Our guide to CSCS card types explained covers what each colour means and who qualifies for it.

Cards from partner schemes under the CSCS Alliance, such as NPORS and CPCS plant operator cards, are also covered by the Go Smart app. This is useful for verifying plant operators at the same time as general trades.

    How Target Zero can help

If you or your team need a CSCS card, the route depends on the role. Labourers need the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test plus a Level 1 award. Supervisors need an SSSTS qualification. Site managers need SMSTS. Trades and technical roles need an NVQ at the appropriate level.

Target Zero delivers all of these routes. Book your SMSTS course for the Black card, SSSTS for the Gold supervisor card, or explore our NVQ qualifications for trades and professional routes. Call our team on 01245 379496 for guidance on the right card for your role.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I check a CSCS card without the registration number?

No. The online checker requires both the registration number and surname. If you do not have the registration number, use the Go Smart app to scan the QR code on the back of the card, which bypasses the need to type the number manually.

Does the CSCS card checker work for NPORS cards?

The online Card Checker only verifies CSCS-branded cards. For NPORS, CPCS, and other Alliance scheme cards, use the Go Smart app, which covers all recognised UK construction card schemes in a single scan.

How long does a CSCS card check take?

Online checks take around 30 seconds from opening the site to seeing the result. Go Smart scans return results in under 5 seconds once the QR code is framed. Both methods are designed for fast site-gate checks.

Can I check multiple CSCS cards at once?

The public Card Checker is designed for one card at a time. Larger employers can apply for CSCS Smart Check, an API-based service that integrates with site access systems and allows bulk verification. Contact CSCS directly for Smart Check enrolment.

What should I do if a worker refuses to show their CSCS card?

Under CDM 2015, the principal contractor has a duty to confirm competence. A refusal to present a card for verification is grounds to deny site access until proof of qualification is provided. Document the refusal and the action taken in your site records.

Do expired CSCS cards still show on the checker?

Yes. The checker returns expired as a specific status, not Not Found, so you can tell the difference between a counterfeit card and one that has simply lapsed. An expired card is not valid for site access and must be renewed before work continues.

Is the CSCS card checker the same as the CITB HS&E test?

No. The Card Checker verifies an existing card, while the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test is a one-off exam you must pass before applying for most CSCS cards. Our free CITB HS&E mock tests help you prepare for the real thing.
