A CSCS card costs between £36 and £50 in 2026, depending on which card you apply for. That is the price of the card itself paid to CSCS, but it is not the full cost of getting one. You also need to pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, which is £22.50, and hold the right qualification for your card type, which can range from a £15 online course for the Green Labourer card to £600 to £1,200 for a trade NVQ. This guide breaks down every cost, card type and renewal fee so you know exactly what to budget.
CSCS card prices in 2026: quick summary
Every CSCS card follows the same pricing structure. The application fee is paid directly to CSCS. The qualification and test fees are separate. Here are the card application fees as of April 2026:
- Green Labourer card: £36
- Blue Skilled Worker card: £36
- Gold Skilled Worker (Advanced Craft) card: £36
- Gold Supervisor card: £36
- Black Manager card: £36
- Red Trainee card: £36
- Red Experienced Worker card: £36
- Red Technical, Supervisory or Management Trainee card: £36
- White Professionally Qualified Person card: £36
- White Construction Related Occupation card: £36
The card fee itself has been steady at £36 since CSCS last adjusted its pricing. Always check the CSCS website for the latest figure before applying, as fees can change with little notice.
What else do you pay for?
The card fee is only part of the picture. To actually get to the point where CSCS will issue a card, you need two other things: a valid CITB HS&E test pass and the correct qualification for the card you want.
CITB Health, Safety and Environment test
Every CSCS card with the CSCS logo requires a current CITB HS&E test pass, dated within the last two years of your application. The test costs £22.50 and is booked through Pearson Vue test centres across the UK. You can revise using our free mock tests, which mirror the question format of the live exam.
There are three versions of the test:
- Operative test for Green and Blue card applicants
- Specialist test for certain Red Trainee routes and plant operators
- Managers and Professionals (MAP) test for Gold Supervisor, Black Manager, White and some Red card routes
Each version costs the same £22.50. If you fail, you must pay again to resit. The pass mark is 45 out of 50 for the operative test. You can read our separate guide on the CSCS MAP test if you are going for a supervisory or managerial card.
The qualification behind your card
This is where the cost varies most. Different cards require different qualifications, and the price tag changes accordingly.
Full cost breakdown by card type
Green Labourer card: £73 to £125 total
The Green card is the cheapest to achieve. You need a Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, which is a one-day course available online or in the classroom. Expect to pay £15 to £65 for the course itself.
- Level 1 Health and Safety Award: £15 to £65
- CITB HS&E operative test: £22.50
- CSCS card fee: £36
- Total: £73.50 to £123.50
Blue Skilled Worker card: £658 to £1,258 total
The Blue card requires a Level 2 NVQ in your trade. NVQ costs vary by trade and provider, but most Level 2 NVQs fall between £600 and £1,200.
- Level 2 NVQ in your trade: £600 to £1,200
- CITB HS&E operative test: £22.50
- CSCS card fee: £36
- Total: £658.50 to £1,258.50
If you already hold the NVQ, the Blue card itself is just the £58.50 for test and application. See our Blue card guide for the full route.
Gold Skilled Worker (Advanced Craft) card: £758 to £1,858 total
The Gold Skilled Worker card is for experienced tradespeople with a Level 3 NVQ. Level 3 NVQs cost more because they cover more ground and involve more assessment.
- Level 3 NVQ in your trade: £700 to £1,800
- CITB HS&E operative test: £22.50
- CSCS card fee: £36
- Total: £758.50 to £1,858.50
Gold Supervisor card: £958 to £2,058 total
For site supervisors, the route is a Level 3 or Level 4 NVQ in construction supervision plus the CITB MAP test. Many employers also require an SSSTS certificate, which is not part of the CSCS application but is often booked alongside the NVQ.
- Level 3 or 4 NVQ in site supervision: £900 to £2,000
- CITB HS&E MAP test: £22.50
- CSCS card fee: £36
- Total: £958.50 to £2,058.50
Our SSSTS course starts from £199 plus VAT if you need the supervisor training certificate as well.
Black Manager card: £1,658 to £3,258 total
The Black Manager card is the most expensive route to complete. It requires a Level 6 or Level 7 NVQ in construction management, and most employers also require a valid SMSTS certificate. The NVQ portfolio work takes between 6 and 18 months depending on your experience.
- Level 6 or 7 NVQ in construction management: £1,600 to £3,200
- CITB HS&E MAP test: £22.50
- CSCS card fee: £36
- Total: £1,658.50 to £3,258.50
Our SMSTS course starts from £399 plus VAT if you need the site manager training certificate as well.
Red Trainee and Experienced Worker cards: £58.50 plus any qualification costs
Red cards come in several forms. The most common are the Red Trainee card and the Red Experienced Worker card. A Red Trainee card is typically issued while you are actively working toward a Level 2 or Level 3 NVQ. The Red Experienced Worker card is a temporary card for those with long experience but no qualification, giving 12 months to complete an NVQ.
- CITB HS&E test: £22.50
- CSCS card fee: £36
- Plus any qualification fees where applicable
CSCS card renewal costs
CSCS cards last five years. Renewal is cheaper than the original application because you do not need to retake your NVQ. The qualification never expires. You only need to:
- Pass a fresh CITB HS&E test (£22.50)
- Pay the card application fee (£36)
- Total renewal cost: £58.50
If you let your card lapse and want it back, the process is the same as renewal. See our guide on how to renew your CSCS card for the full steps.
Can your employer pay for your CSCS card?
Yes, and many do. Employers who pay the CITB Levy can often claim grant funding toward the cost of NVQs and CSCS-related training for their workforce. The CITB grant scheme changes periodically, so current grant amounts are worth checking directly with CITB before relying on them.
Self-employed tradespeople can usually claim CSCS costs against tax as a business expense. Speak to your accountant for specific advice. For employer bookings covering a team, we offer group rates and handle the CITB grant paperwork on your behalf. Call 01245 379496 to discuss a group NVQ booking.
How to keep CSCS costs down
A few practical tips to reduce the total cost of getting or renewing a CSCS card:
- Revise for free. Use free mock tests to pass the CITB HS&E test first time rather than paying £22.50 twice.
- Book your NVQ with a provider that covers all three costs. Some training providers bundle the NVQ, CITB test booking and CSCS application fee into a single package, which often works out cheaper than paying separately.
- Apply digital first. The My CSCS digital card is issued immediately on approval, so you can work on site without waiting for the physical card.
- Renew early. Do not wait for your card to expire. Renewing 2 to 3 months early avoids any gap in your ability to work on site.
- Claim CITB grant funding. If your employer is CITB registered, NVQ training attracts CITB grant support. Even self-employed tradespeople may qualify through a sponsoring employer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the CSCS card free for anyone?
No. CSCS charges £36 for every card type, and this fee applies to first-time applicants, renewals and upgrades. Some employers will reimburse the cost as part of onboarding, but CSCS itself does not issue free cards.
How much does it cost to upgrade from a Green card to a Blue card?
Once you hold a Level 2 NVQ in your trade, the upgrade cost is just £58.50: £22.50 for a fresh CITB operative test plus £36 for the new Blue card application. You do not need to wait for your Green card to expire to upgrade.
Do I pay the card fee again if I fail the CITB HS&E test?
No, not for the card. You only pay the £36 card fee once you have passed the test and are ready to apply. However, each attempt at the CITB test itself costs £22.50, so failing means paying again to resit.
Can I pay for my CSCS card in instalments?
CSCS itself does not offer instalment plans for the £36 application fee. Some NVQ providers offer payment plans for the larger NVQ qualification cost, which is the most expensive part of getting a Blue, Gold or Black card. We offer payment options on NVQ bookings. Call 01245 379496 to discuss terms.
Are there any hidden costs with CSCS?
Not from CSCS directly. The £36 card fee covers the application and the card itself, including the My CSCS digital card and replacement card service. Additional costs only apply if you need to retake the CITB HS&E test, if you need an overseas qualification compared through UK ENIC, or if your NVQ assessment involves travel or specialist equipment.
How much does a replacement CSCS card cost?
A replacement card for a lost or damaged CSCS card costs £28. This can be ordered through CSCS by phone or online. The My CSCS digital card on your phone is free and does not need replacing if you lose your physical card.
Is the CSCS card worth it?
For anyone working in UK construction, yes. Most main contractors and BuildUK member sites will not allow operatives on site without a valid CSCS card matching their role. The card itself costs £36. The NVQ behind a Blue, Gold or Black card pays back many times over through higher day rates, more work availability and employer preference. It is one of the highest-return qualifications in construction.
