If your CSCS card has expired, you cannot legally work on most UK construction sites until you renew it. The good news is you do not need to start from scratch. Your underlying qualification, whether that is an NVQ, a Level 1 Health and Safety award or a degree, does not expire. You only need to pass a fresh CITB Health, Safety and Environment test and reapply to CSCS. Most people complete the process in two to four weeks. This guide covers exactly what to do, how much it costs and how to avoid problems on site in the meantime.
What happens when your CSCS card expires?
CSCS cards are valid for five years. Once the expiry date passes, the card is no longer valid for site access. The card does not disappear overnight in any technical sense, but main contractors check card validity through the CSCS Smart Check system, and an expired card will be flagged immediately.
In practical terms, an expired card means:
- You cannot pass the card check at site induction
- You cannot access BuildUK member sites as a qualified worker
- Your employer may pull you off site until the card is renewed
- Your daily rate or position may be affected if you are booked as a skilled worker
The expiry does not remove your qualifications or your right to work in construction. It only removes your proof of competence on site. That proof is restored as soon as you renew.
How to renew an expired CSCS card
The renewal process is the same whether your card expired yesterday or five years ago. CSCS does not penalise you for letting a card lapse. Here are the three steps:
Step 1: Pass a fresh CITB HS&E test
The Health, Safety and Environment test must be dated within the last two years at the point of your card application. If your last test was more than two years ago, you must retake it. The test costs £22.50 and is booked through Pearson Vue test centres across the UK.
There are three versions of the test. Make sure you book the right one for the card you want to renew:
- Operative test for Green Labourer and Blue Skilled Worker cards
- Specialist test for certain plant operator and Red Trainee routes
- Managers and Professionals (MAP) test for Gold Supervisor, Black Manager and White cards
Revise using our free CSCS mock tests, which use the same case study format as the live exam. If you are sitting the supervisor or manager version, our CSCS MAP test guide covers what to expect.
Step 2: Apply to CSCS for your new card
Once you have a valid test pass, apply online at cscs.uk.com or by phone. You will need:
- Your CITB HS&E test pass reference
- Proof of your qualification, typically the certificate number from your NVQ or Level 1 Award
- A passport-style photograph
- The £36 application fee
If CSCS already has your qualification on file from your previous application, this step is faster. They can often verify your NVQ or Level 1 award directly without you needing to resubmit the certificate.
Step 3: Receive your new card
CSCS typically issues cards within 10 working days of a complete application. A digital version appears in the My CSCS app as soon as the card is approved, usually within 48 hours. Most main contractors accept the digital card as valid proof while the physical card is in the post.
How much does it cost to renew an expired CSCS card?
The cost to renew an expired card is £58.50:
- CITB Health, Safety and Environment test: £22.50
- CSCS card application fee: £36
You do not pay for your NVQ or Level 1 award again. The qualification itself never expires. Only the card does. For a full price breakdown by card type, see our guide on CSCS card costs in 2026.
What if your card expired years ago?
There is no deadline to renew a lapsed CSCS card. You can renew one that expired last month or one that expired ten years ago. The process is identical. CSCS holds your qualification records indefinitely, so your NVQ from 2008 is still usable in 2026.
The only thing that might have changed is the test. CSCS and CITB occasionally update the case studies and question bank, so a test passed in the distant past may feel different from what you remember. The free mock tests are a good way to get up to speed before booking the live exam.
Can you work on site while your card is expired?
In most cases, no. Main contractors use CSCS Smart Check at site induction, and the system will flag an expired card. There are limited circumstances where a site may allow temporary access:
- If you can show a digital My CSCS card that has been renewed but not yet arrived as a physical card
- If the site operates outside BuildUK rules and has its own competence checking process
- If you are escorted by a valid card holder and doing supervised work
These are exceptions, not the rule. The safer approach is to renew before your card expires. Most people set a reminder for 3 months before the expiry date so there is time to book the test, pass it and apply without any gap.
Renewing early: why most people do it 2 to 3 months ahead
CSCS allows you to renew at any point in the final six months of your card’s validity. Renewing early means:
- No gap between cards, so no interruption to work
- Your new five-year validity starts from the date of issue, not the date the old one expired, so you do not lose time
- Time to retake the test if you fail first attempt without panic
- Employers with site access audits prefer this approach
Check the expiry date on your current card now. If it is less than 6 months away, start the renewal process this week.
What about expired NVQs or Level 1 awards?
NVQs and Level 1 Health and Safety awards do not expire. Once you achieve the qualification, it is yours for life. This is important to understand because some workers assume that an old NVQ certificate is no longer valid. It is. CSCS will still accept a Level 2 NVQ earned in 1998 toward a Blue card application in 2026.
The qualification never expires. The CITB HS&E test does. The CSCS card does. That is why renewal is cheap, quick and repeatable.
Can your employer pay for card renewal?
Yes, and many do. Some construction firms cover card renewal as a standard part of staff retention, particularly for site supervisors, managers and skilled tradespeople. Self-employed workers can usually claim the renewal cost against tax as a business expense. Speak to your accountant for specific advice.
If you hold a Gold Supervisor or Black Manager card, your employer often has the biggest incentive to keep your card current, as a lapsed card can pause your eligibility to manage or supervise the site.
Common problems with CSCS card renewal
A few issues come up regularly. Knowing them in advance saves time:
- The CITB test reference is too old. Tests are valid for two years at the point of card application. If you take your test and delay your application, you may run out of time.
- The qualification certificate cannot be verified. CSCS sometimes cannot find older NVQs in their records. You may need to contact your original NVQ provider for a certificate reissue.
- The wrong version of the test was taken. A Gold Supervisor renewal requires the MAP test, not the operative test. Make sure you book correctly.
- The photograph does not meet the standard. CSCS uses passport-style requirements. An older or lower-quality photo will delay the application.
If CSCS cannot verify your qualification and you no longer have the certificate, the awarding body for your original NVQ can usually reissue it for a small fee. City and Guilds, NOCN and ProQual are the main awarding bodies for construction NVQs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a grace period after my CSCS card expires?
No. The day after the expiry date, the card is invalid. CSCS Smart Check will flag it at site induction. There is no official grace period, though some individual sites may allow a short window at their own discretion.
Do I need to retake my NVQ when my card expires?
No. Your NVQ qualification never expires. CSCS will accept an NVQ certificate of any age as proof of competence for card renewal. You only need to retake the CITB HS&E test, which must be dated within the last two years.
Can I renew my CSCS card online?
Yes. The full renewal application can be completed at cscs.uk.com. You will need your CITB test reference, qualification details, a digital photograph and a payment method. Phone applications are also available if you prefer.
How long does it take to get a renewed CSCS card?
CSCS typically issues cards within 10 working days of a complete application. The My CSCS digital card is usually active within 48 hours of approval, so you can return to site before the physical card arrives.
What if I fail the CITB test during renewal?
You can retake the test as many times as you need. Each attempt costs £22.50. There is no waiting period between attempts, though in practice Pearson Vue booking slots often mean a few days between tests. Use the time to revise with our free mock tests.
Can I still use my card on the expiry day?
Yes. The card is valid up to and including the stated expiry date. It becomes invalid from the following day onwards.
What happens to my CSCS points or history when the card expires?
Nothing is lost. CSCS holds your application history, test history and qualification records on file. When you renew, your new card is issued with a fresh five-year validity but your record continues from where it left off.
Renew before it expires
If your CSCS card has expired or is about to, the renewal process is quick and relatively inexpensive. Pass a fresh CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, submit your application with your qualification proof, and wait around 10 working days for your new card.
If you need help with the test, our free CSCS mock tests cover the operative and MAP versions. If your qualification needs upgrading, for example moving from a Level 2 Blue card to a Level 3 Gold card, we offer NVQ assessment across England, Scotland and Wales with a 100 per cent pass rate across all learners who complete their portfolio.
